The Moments in Between IV

The Moment of Returning

Figuratively speaking, there’s a stillness that follows a crossing – the first threshold. It is not relief and it is not triumph. You haven’t done anything yet. It is the quiet recognition that something has shifted within. The world you step back into is the same shape it was before yet no longer fits the way it once did. You’ve changed, and all things being equal, for the better.

These topics about the moments stewing in our minds is a lot more cerebral that I am comfortable with. I struggle with wording in unfamiliar territory. Finding the terminology that properly describes what I’m thinking has been a challenge with this piece. I don’t want to mislead with a pile of mumbo-jumbo in an attempt to make myself appear more knowledgeable than I truly am. I would fail at that anyway. I do want to convey the message: Stop and smell the roses.

The Returning I write about is not about going back. It is about carrying on. The familiar path, door, or room, greet you as they always have, but you meet them with a slightly altered center of gravity. You notice details you used to overlook. You move with a steadier awareness. You understand the weight of what you bring with you, even if no one else sees it yet. Situational awareness grows. you return to the now better prepared to meet what comes next.

This moment is small on the surface, and it won’t announce its arrival. It lives in the pause before you turn the key, in the breath you take before crossing the threshold, in the way your hand hesitates over something you once touched without thinking. It is the internal recalibration that happens before the rest of your life catches up, and it was less than a nano-second ago.

Returning is the quiet acknowledgment that you are no longer the person who left. It is the first step into a world that has not yet learned who you have become.

moments - Cinematic, quiet moment of returning: a lone figure stands just outside a familiar doorway at dawn, soft golden light spilling from inside onto a worn wooden porch. The figure pauses mid‑step, holding a small object gathered from their journey. The world behind them is muted and cool, the world ahead warm and unchanged. Subtle shift in posture shows internal transformation. Shallow depth of field, natural light, realistic textures, no stylization.
