Good Reads from Popi

This page is dedicated to my writing. Some for sale, some for fun. When each of the now-for-free chapters I release make up a completed story, I will compile them into one document for easier reading. If you follow along online with the chapters to the end, I’ll send you a link to download the book in full, also for free. After an initial period as a finished book (probably a month), I will begin to sell them from the store here on my site. Additionally, I pledge 20% of my earnings from book sales to one of two non-profits:

  • The Vietnam Dog Handlers Association (VDHA)
  • Military Working Dog Heritage Museum (MWDHM)

The free books will be released chapter by chapter and you’ll read them on my website. I post the links on my all my social media accounts so folks can stay in the loop. You can also subscribe to my website and receive notices when I release new content. There is no fee for a subscription. When I’m rich and famous I’ll start charging you an arm and a leg to follow me.

Read - Real life story about Vietnam

R.E.M.F Shorty’s Path.

This is a true story from my past that resonates still today.

This is a for-sale autobiography.

Read - Fantasy book cover with medieval theme.

Burtt The Blade

Burtt is an orphaned peon living outside the bubble of a purified society. His struggles are epic and deadly. But, if anyone can overcome, It’s Burtt.

This is a for-sale fiction.

Read - Treasure Map

The Mystery of Willow Wood

This is a short story suitable for all audiences.

It’s free.

Read - Tower during storm with people gathered

The Last Signal

This is a story of survival after the fall. A small group of people strive to save what’s left of humanity, not without great peril.

This story will remain a free read. It is one of several I wrote and published here. The link above (click on the title) will take you to chapter 1. At the end of each chapter in these fictions, there is a link to the next chapter.

Guardians of the Maw

This is a Sci-Fi wrote for grins. A force of Astronauts and adventurers are sent to protect the known universe from a rift in space – more specifically, to protect against what comes out of it.

This book will remain a free read. It’ll be in Chapter-by-Chapter format, the same as “The Last Signal“, for the time being.

Firebase Bearcat, Republic of South Vietnam

K9LTW

This is a fictitious story I’ve completed through part #1. I will continue this story line into a series; I believe and I will eventually sell them. Part #2 is in progress (in my head).

For now, they are free and in Chapter-by-Chapter format as above.

Read - Doh Rey Me

Doh – Rey – Me DohReyMe&theKitties3-ch1

This is a favorite of mine. I’m having too much fun writing it. It’s about an old timer who stumbles on some orphaned wolf cubs in the high Sierras, decides to save them. This journey is perilous every step of the way. I am two books into this series, and I see no end in sight yet.

This too will remain free for the time being in Chapter-by-Chapter format.

Why Read?

Ah, man, there’s something downright magical about cracking open a good book, isn’t there? You know that feeling when you sink into your favorite chair, maybe with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, and the world just fades away? That’s the joy of reading for ya—it’s like a mini-vacation without the hassle of packing or airport lines. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve ditched a stressful day by diving into a story that whisks me off to far-off lands, ancient times, or even inside someone’s wild imagination. It’s cheap therapy, if you ask me.

Read - A person reading a book while relaxing on a cozy armchair, with warm ambient lighting in a comfortable room.

Think about it: reading lets you escape the daily grind. One minute you’re slogging through emails or chores, the next you’re battling dragons in a fantasy realm or solving mysteries alongside a clever detective. I remember picking up “The Hobbit” as a kid—Bilbo’s unexpected journey had me hooked, staying up way past bedtime with a flashlight under the covers. That sense of adventure sticks with you, right? It’s not just kids’ stuff either; as an adult, I turn to thrillers or sci-fi when life gets too predictable. Books are like portals, buddy—no passport required.

But it’s not all about running away. Reading sharpens your mind in ways you don’t even notice at first. You pick up new words, ideas, and perspectives without trying too hard. Ever read a history book that makes you go, “Whoa, I had no idea that happened”? Or a self-help gem that flips your thinking on its head? It’s like upgrading your brain’s software. Plus, it builds empathy—big time. Stepping into characters’ shoes, feeling their joys and heartaches, makes you better at understanding real people. I’ve had arguments with friends that got resolved because a novel taught me to see things from another angle. Kinda sneaky how books do that, huh?

And don’t get me started on the social side. Reading connects folks in the coolest ways. Book clubs are a blast—sipping wine, debating plot twists, laughing over ridiculous endings. Or online forums where you can geek out with strangers over shared favorites. I once bonded with a total random at a coffee shop because we both had dog-eared copies of “1984.” It’s like an instant club membership. Libraries and bookstores? They’re community hubs, full of events, recommendations, and that musty paper smell that’s oddly comforting.

Family enjoying audiobook in a car, wearing headphones and laughing, with a speech bubble that says 'aaabook.!'

Of course, there’s the sheer pleasure of the words themselves. A well-turned phrase can hit you like a gut punch or a warm hug. Poets like Maya Angelou or novelists like Toni Morrison—they craft sentences that linger, making you pause and savor. Even comics or graphic novels pack that punch with visuals and snappy dialogue. Reading’s flexible too; audiobooks let you “read” while driving or jogging, podcasts spin tales on the go. No excuses, really.

Sure, screens compete these days—Netflix binges, social media scrolls—but nothing beats the satisfaction of finishing a book. That “aha” moment when it all clicks, or the bittersweet close of a series. It leaves you fuller, wiser, maybe even inspired to write your own stuff. In a noisy world, reading’s your quiet rebellion, a way to recharge and rediscover wonder. So, grab a book, any book, and let it work its charm. You’ll thank yourself later.
