Good Morning
It’s Thursday, April 30, 2026 | 1220 PDT | Livermore, California. Here is what you need to know.
TOP STORY: SUPREME COURT GUTS VOTING RIGHTS ACT IN LOUISIANA MAP DECISION
The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that Louisiana must redraw its congressional map, striking down a lower court decision that had created a second majority-Black district in the state. In a 6-3 decision along partisan lines, the conservative majority found that the map “relied too heavily on race” and violated the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause, effectively gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the last remaining major provision of the landmark 1965 civil rights law.
Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the majority opinion that creating districts based on racial demographics constitutes unconstitutional gerrymandering, even when done to remedy historical discrimination. More than a third of Louisiana’s voting age population is Black, but the ruling limits how race can be considered when drawing electoral maps. Democratic Representative Terri Sewell of Alabama stated her intention to revise legislation “to address the court rulings that have sought to undermine” the Voting Rights Act.
The ruling sets the stage for what could be the largest decline in Black representation in Congress in modern history, with Republican leaders already initiating discussions for new redistricting of the House of Representatives. Louisiana’s congressional primaries have been delayed as the state works to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision. The timeline for implementing changes before the midterm elections this fall remains uncertain, as many states are nearing or have already begun their congressional primary elections.
I’m throwing the flag in on this one. I really want to make the report over. Then again, I’m tired of correcting the same tendency to pick out controversial coverage of an issue that overrepresents one side of the story. This is obviously someone’s opinion of what happened with SCOTUS on the redistricting issue.
Regardless the opinion of whomever wrote the article Perplexity references, IMO, redistricting is a partisan tool that should never have been introduced to our political system at all. It’s all too easy while performing this redistricting task to fix things to have a certain weight in either direction. That’s “fixing the vote” no matter how you look at it and it’s cheating. But then again, we’d been living in a near state of anarchy for four years straight, so it’s difficult to single out one offense that should be prosecuted. There are more – much more.
Anyway, this is news it found. I don’t believe it is corrupt at its core (Perplexity or any AI). I believe that when I tell it to research something, telling it to ignore opinion is a very abstract guideline. I need to accept that some of this may have a slant if I want to do this at all. At least in this case, it’s easy to see.
Popi’s UnSpun News – 30APR26– MARKETS
U.S. stocks ended mostly lower Wednesday as investors weighed a divided Federal Reserve decision to hold rates steady, surging oil prices linked to the Iran conflict, and anticipation of major tech earnings reports. Markets showed caution ahead of what could be Chairman Jerome Powell’s final meeting leading the central bank.

| Dow Jones | 48,861.81 | -0.6% |
| Nasdaq | 24,673.24 | +0.04% |

| California Avg. Gas Price | $6.01/gal | — |
The Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate steady at 3.5% to 3.75% in an unusually divided decision that saw the highest level of dissent since 1992. Market participants had fully anticipated no change, but the internal division at the Fed signals ongoing disagreement among policymakers about the appropriate response to persistent inflation pressures and geopolitical uncertainty. Oil prices continued their climb, with Brent crude reaching levels not seen since 2022 as President Trump indicated preparations for an extended blockade of Iranian ports.
Rising energy costs are feeding concerns about broader inflation that could dent economic growth, with gasoline prices in California now exceeding $6 per gallon. The VIX volatility index jumped more than 5% to close at 18.81, reflecting increased investor nervousness about the combination of geopolitical tensions, monetary policy uncertainty, and upcoming earnings from major technology companies. Treasury yields remained elevated at 4.42% for the 10-year note as bond markets digested the implications of sustained higher oil prices on inflation expectations.
