Here is my assessment of the New England Patriots heading into training camp for the 2026 NFL season:

I know there are some fans who will read this. All my family are back east and mostly Patriot fans. We were pleasantly surprised by last year’s effort and we’re all looking forward to another killer football year in New England. Can they go all the way? They added talent this year. They filled some gaps and bulked up in places. They have some serious offensive weapons – even more so than last year when you consider player development/experience. So, despite the tougher schedule, I think they are ready for the next level.
In short, I CAN’T WAIT!
Here’s why I’m psyched:
- 1. Key Additions & Offseason Roster Upgrades – New England Patriots
The Patriots made several high-profile moves heading into the 2026 campaign to build surrounding talent around starting quarterback Drake Maye:
- Wide Receiver Upgrades:
- A.J. Brown (WR): Acquired in a major trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in June 2026 for future draft choices.
- Romeo Doubs (WR): Signed to a four-year free-agent contract from the Green Bay Packers.
- Offensive Line Fortification:
- Alijah Vera-Tucker (G): Signed to a three-year contract in free agency.
- Caleb Lomu (T): Drafted in the 1st round of the 2026 NFL Draft and signed his rookie contract.
- James Hudson III (OT): Signed to a one-year deal.
- Defensive & Special Teams Additions:
- Dre’Mont Jones (DE): Signed to a three-year free-agent deal.
- Kevin Byard III (S): Veteran safety signed as a free agent on a one-year deal.
- K.J. Britt (LB): Signed as a free agent from Miami.
- Kindle Vildor (CB): Signed in free agency to bolster secondary depth.
- Reggie Gilliam (FB): Signed to a three-year free-agent contract.
- 2. 2026 Draft Class & Rookie Status – New England Patriots
All primary 2026 draft picks are under contract:
- 1st Round: Caleb Lomu (OT) — Signed
- 2nd Round: Gabe Jacas (LB) — Signed in late July
- 3rd Round: Eli Raridon (TE) — Signed
- Late-Round Picks Signed: CB Karon Prunty (5th rd), T Dametrious Crownover (6th rd), LB Namdi Obiazor (6th rd), QB Behren Morton, RB Jamarion “Jam” Miller, LB Quintayvious Hutchins.
- Waiver Claim: Claimed rookie WR Kobe Prentice off waivers from Carolina.
- 3. Departures, Releases & Unsigned Free Agent Status – New England Patriots
- Released Veteran Players: Stefon Diggs (WR), Jahlani Tavai (LB), Anfernee Jennings (LB), Antonio Gibson (RB), Josh Dobbs (QB), and Elijah Mitchell (RB).
- Traded Away: Center Garrett Bradbury was traded to the Chicago Bears for a 2027 5th-round draft pick; LB Marte Mapu was traded to the Houston Texans.
- Unsigned / Departed Unrestricted Free Agents: Tight end Austin Hooper, edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson, and tackles Vederian Lowe and Thayer Munford declared for free agency in March.
- 4. Outlook for the Year & Professional Odds – New England Patriots
- Head Coach & Quarterback: Mike Vrabel leads the coaching staff with Drake Maye under center for his third NFL season.
- Projected Win Total: Sportsbooks (BetMGM) have set the Patriots’ 2026 regular season win total at 9.5 wins (Over 9.5 at -145 / Under 9.5 at +120).
- AFC East Division Race: The Patriots hold the second-highest projected win total in the AFC East behind the Buffalo Bills (10.5), positioned ahead of the New York Jets (5.5) and Miami Dolphins (4.5).
- Schedule & Performance Factors: Coming off a 14-win campaign in 2025, analysts project potential regression due to a much harder strength of schedule—facing nine games against top-15 offensive DVOA teams and seven difficult road games against teams projected with 9.5+ wins. However, the addition of A.J. Brown and offensive line re-tooling gives New England one of the higher-ceiling passing attacks in the AFC.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m ready and I’m PUMPED UP for football. All indications point to this being a better team than last year and that ain’t half bad. GO PATS!
