Good Reads from Popi

Weaving Dreams into Reality

Good Reads: Popi’s offers a visual spectacle, but it also presents a small library of literary adventure into the world of fiction and autobiography. With narratives as compelling as the visuals, I strive to paint with words, infusing the imagination with characters and stories that linger long after the last page is turned. Delve into the depth of emotion and the height of adventure, where each book promises to be a companion you’ll cherish. Click the link below the cover pic to download for free.

Good Reads: Read a Book

Good Reads - shorty's path - an autobiography covering my service in the US Army .
R.E.M.F Shorty’s Path – a true story of two years of my life spent warfighting and learning the trade with the most ferociously dedicated soldier and partner a man could ever hope to share a foxhole or walk a berm with. My Prince-16×5 was more than, in every capacity. I always include his (equipment) serial # as a reminder that we have to be ever vigilant and be sure these animals are properly cared for and forever remembered in our folklore. Understanding the experiences of these brave animals and the teams they served is essential to my honor. “Lest we forget”

Good Reads - A fiction of survial in post appocalyptic America.
Burtt the Blade – a story of survival in a post-apocalyptic world where children are left to fend for themselves outside the domed city in the remains of the old society destroyed by nuclear holocaust. Without connection to a high family, there was no place for them inside.

Good Reads - by the fire.
There’s nothing quite like a quiet evening by the fire with a favorite book and a pair of well-loved socks.

I think of these as good reads. Yes I do read my own work, of course. You may or may not agree. They are free to download. One day I will return to photography. That too should be worthy viewing. As I finish compiling the stories I wrote or will write on-line, I’ll post those for download also. I have a couple to catch up on, Doh-Rey-Me and K9LTW I think are good reads too and ripe for sequels.

The books I write and publish will first be released here chapter by chapter as I write them. You’ll read them on my website like any other post. Once I’ve created a full book, the faithful can come here (this page) to download it. Until then, I post the links on social media (Michael HurderFB) so folks can stay in the loop. You can also subscribe to my website and receive notices when I release new content. There is no fee for a subscription.

Why Read?

Ah, man, there’s something downright magical about cracking open a good book, isn’t there? You know that feeling when you sink into your favorite chair, maybe with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, and the world just fades away? That’s the joy of reading for ya—it’s like a mini-vacation without the hassle of packing or airport lines. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve ditched a stressful day by diving into a story that whisks me off to far-off lands, ancient times, or even inside someone’s wild imagination. It’s cheap therapy, if you ask me.

Think about it: reading lets you escape the daily grind. One minute you’re slogging through emails or chores, the next you’re battling dragons in a fantasy realm or solving mysteries alongside a clever detective. I remember picking up “The Hobbit” as a kid—Bilbo’s unexpected journey had me hooked, staying up way past bedtime with a flashlight under the covers. That sense of adventure sticks with you, right? It’s not just kids’ stuff either; as an adult, I turn to thrillers or sci-fi when life gets too predictable. Books are like portals, buddy—no passport required.

But it’s not all about running away. Reading good reads sharpens your mind in ways you don’t even notice at first. You pick up new words, ideas, and perspectives without trying too hard. Ever read a history book that makes you go, “Whoa, I had no idea that happened”? Or a self-help gem that flips your thinking on its head? It’s like upgrading your brain’s software. Plus, it builds empathy—big time. Stepping into characters’ shoes, feeling their joys and heartaches, makes you better at understanding real people. I’ve had arguments with friends that got resolved because a novel taught me to see things from another angle. Kinda sneaky how books do that, huh?

And don’t get me started on the social side. Reading connects folks in the coolest ways. Book clubs are a blast—sipping wine, debating plot twists, laughing over ridiculous endings. Or online forums where you can geek out with strangers over shared favorites. I once bonded with a total random at a coffee shop because we both had dog-eared copies of “1984.” It’s like an instant club membership. Libraries and bookstores? They’re community hubs, full of events, recommendations, and that musty paper smell that’s oddly comforting.

Of course, there’s the sheer pleasure of the words themselves. A well-turned phrase can hit you like a gut punch or a warm hug. Poets like Maya Angelou or novelists like Toni Morrison—they craft sentences that linger, making you pause and savor. Even comics or graphic novels pack that punch with visuals and snappy dialogue. Reading’s flexible too; audiobooks let you “read” while driving or jogging, podcasts spin tales on the go. No excuses, really.

Sure, screens compete these days—Netflix binges, social media scrolls—but nothing beats the satisfaction of finishing a book. That “aha” moment when it all clicks, or the bittersweet close of a series. It leaves you fuller, wiser, maybe even inspired to write your own stuff. In a noisy world, reading’s your quiet rebellion, a way to recharge and rediscover wonder. So, grab a book, any book, and let it work its charm. You’ll thank yourself later.
