Photos 8May26 – Popi’s thoughts: There’s another reason I like this city so much. We love our military and it’s history. We celebrate every year on the various Military centric holidays and periods were we honor our heroes here in the USA. If you want to know who my heroes are, they flew these birds some years ago.

Fun factoids:
Livermore, California, holds a profound and enduring connection to the United States military, evolving from a wartime training hub into a cornerstone of national nuclear security.
World War II: “Fleet City” and Pilot Training
During World War II, the Livermore Valley was transformed by the rapid establishment of massive military installations. In 1942, the Naval Air Station Livermore was built to train pilots, featuring a unique “square” runway that allowed for takeoffs in any direction. This station managed several outlying fields, including Abel Field and Wagoner Airport.
Simultaneously, the neighboring Camp Parks, Camp Shoemaker, and the Shoemaker Naval Hospital were commissioned. Collectively known as “Fleet City,” this complex was a vital hub for the Navy Seabees. At its peak, the parade grounds could muster over 20,000 personnel.
The Cold War and Lawrence Livermore
After the war, the NAS Livermore site transitioned to a scientific mission. In 1952, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) was established at the former airbase to meet urgent Cold War security needs. The laboratory’s early history is defined by its military contributions, most notably the development of the W47 warhead for the Navy’s Polaris missiles, which revolutionized strategic deterrence.
Modern-Day Legacy Photos 8May26
Today, the military presence remains a visible part of the community:
- Parks Reserve Forces Training Area: The successor to Camp Parks serves as a premier training site for Army Reserve and National Guard units.
- LLNL Partnerships: The lab continues to collaborate with the Department of Defense on advanced technologies and military education programs.
- Community Honors: Local organizations like VFW Post 7265 and the Livermore Heritage Guild preserve the stories of those who served, ensuring that Livermore’s identity as a “military-loving” city remains intact.
