You all know how to freeze a bird in flight or a fast-moving car by cranking your shutter speed up to 1/2000th of a second. But what happens when you want to do the exact opposite? What if you want to turn a chaotic, crashing ocean tide into a calm, misty fog, or stretch a rushing waterfall into a silky, seamless ribbon of white?
To do that, you need a slow shutter speed. Sometimes you’ll have to leave that shutter open for 2 seconds, 10 seconds, or even several minutes.
But you’ve likely run into a major roadblock when trying this in broad daylight: overexposure. You drop your ISO to 100, you stop your aperture down to f/22, and your shutter speed is still too fast because the sun is just too bright. If you force a 5-second exposure, your image is completely blown out, a blinding wall of white.
That is where your new best friend comes in: the ND filter.
What is an ND Filter?
Think of a Neutral Density filter as sunglasses for your lens.
It is a piece of darkened glass that screws onto the front of your lens. The “neutral” part means it is completely color-abstract; it doesn’t change the colors of your scene, shift the white balance, or add a tint. The “density” part just means it cuts down the volume of light entering the camera.
Why Does It Work?
It all comes down to the exposure triangle. If you want to keep the shutter open longer to blur motion, you have to find a way to offset all that extra light pouring in while the door is open.
When you slap an ND filter on your lens, you are artificially introducing darkness. Because the glass blocks a massive percentage of the ambient light, your camera’s sensor is suddenly starved for it. To get a proper exposure, you are forced to keep that shutter open much longer than you normally could.
The Sunglass Analogy: If you step outside on a bright afternoon, your eyes squint to let less light in. Put on a dark pair of sunglasses, and your pupils dilate (open up) to see clearly. The ND filter tricks your camera in a similar way, forcing you to use a much longer shutter speed just to gather enough light for a balanced shot.
When is its use most optimal?
You won’t need an ND filter if you’re shooting long exposures at midnight—nature provides the darkness for you. The optimal time to pull an ND filter out of your bag is when you want to capture motion but have too much ambient light to do it naturally.
Here are the classic, most optimal scenarios:
- Moving Water: Waterfalls, ocean waves, or rushing rivers. A 2-to-10-second exposure turns turbulent water into a glassy, ethereal surface or a smooth, dreamy mist.
- Sky and Clouds: On a windy day, putting on a strong ND filter for a 30-second exposure will turn jagged, moving clouds into beautiful, dramatic streaks across the sky, adding an incredible sense of scale and movement.
- Ghosting Crowds: Want to shoot a famous historical landmark or a bustling city plaza but don’t want a thousand tourists ruining the shot? A very long exposure (like 2 or 3 minutes) will completely erase anyone walking through the frame, because they aren’t in one spot long enough to register on the sensor. Only the static buildings remain.
- Shallow Depth of Field in Bright Sun: Sometimes it’s not even about blurring motion. If you want to shoot a portrait outside at high noon with a beautiful, blurry background at f/1.4, your shutter speed might max out and still overexpose. An ND filter cuts the light so you can shoot wide open in the blazing sun.
A Quick Warning Before You Shoot – Slowing the Shutter – Photo Tips
Remember, if your shutter is open for seconds at a time to blur the water or clouds, it will also blur you. A rock-solid tripod is mandatory here. Any movement from your hands, or even the wind shaking your camera strap, will ruin the sharpness of the static elements in your frame, like the rocks around a waterfall or the buildings in a cityscape.
