26Jun-Photo Release – I remember this shoot for one reason. It’s one of the few times I was caught out in a downpour with no shelter in site here in rain scarce California. Towards the middle of this shoot there’s an image with the sun just barely peeking through the clouds. Just below the sun and to the right of center, you can see some boiling clouds headed over the ridge. I wasn’t looking that way, I was looking for good shots. The girls didn’t care – the more mud the better. They were just bursting to get out of the car while I geared up. I did care because the entire trail is clay and when it gets wet, well, ice wishes it was as slippery. As a result, we got caught about a half mile from the car, and oh man, did we ever get wet.

I had to take shirt and jacket off, drape the camera over my neck, put the shorts and jackets back on top of the camera to protect it from the elements. I had to tip-toe back so I didn’t take a spill on the reddish-brown skating rink. A week later when I retold the story at the camera club I belonged to, one guy asked if I was aware how much of a tank the D850 was. Obviously I didn’t then, but now I have no big issue with the wet or the mud. Just don’t remove a lens and exposed the innards to heavy weather. The body exterior can take it. Wipe it clean when you get home. Anyway, the car smelled like drowned dog for weeks.
I do have rain gear for when I’m sure it will rain. You don’t want to intentionally play in the rain or snow with this expensive gear, but if you get caught, don’t panic. I can’t speak for other brands or models, but I believe most modern bodies can take it, so long as you don’t overdo it.
Shooting in this kind of light is a landscape photographers dream come true. So easy to work with. I love processing these kind of shoots as there is so much you can do with them compared to the usual bright-sunny fare. I think you’ll agree; these shoots are more likely to produce a clean dramatic shot without over-processing, e.g. toning down extreme sunlight’s oppressive, image altering effects or having to use filters.

This shoot was made at the real beginning of winter here. November takes it’s time deciding which kind of November it will be each year. I’ve been up on those peaks with a t-shirt or a winter jacket, on nearly the same dates. In Cali, if the sun comes out, you can almost always depend on removing your jacket at least whatever time of year it is. It can be relatively cool out of the blue in the summer too.
