09Jul-Photo Release – I’d been here several times prior to this visit. This was a must see along with the Waterford Crystal Tour. There are two ways to go here. You can pay the entrance fee and tour it yourself at your own speed, or you can take an audio tour that guides you through all the exhibits for more $. Until Donna and I did it together in 2019 I wouldn’t pay for the (audio self-tour). I also remembered that I couldn’t bring a camera in back then, so this time I left it in the darn car, but we did purchase the audio tour this time. It was super awesome – I love history. (funny aside – I hated history in school).
Here’s the thing about going here. Getting to the castle is simple. It’s in the heart of Kilkenny. It’s a bit more than an hour drive from the hotel. While the options may be better away from the castle, parking anywhere near it takes nothing short of a miracle, shamrocks, Leprechauns, or a Rugby game in the next county. Like I said, I left the camera in the car. While paying for our tour I noticed that dang near everyone had cameras. No flashes, which is the real problem), but they had their cameras. I was not returning to the car for my camera. So my S22-Ultra got a workout that day.
Normally, I feel compelled to enhance colors – a holdover from pre-cataract surgery when I couldn’t see very well and didn’t realize how badly. I do it now as an accent when I play with AI functions on my photos and always end up toning the adjustment down. What I realized when I got home with these photos was that the colors were all super-saturated right out of the phone camera. I made some comparisons between the camera and the phone photos. There was a minor difference in vibrance, but saturation was about equal. It wasn’t the phone causing the tint. The bright greens of Ireland, made everything more vivid. If you had an uncommonly sunny day to work with, bright colors almost shimmered. Cloudy grey days (the norm) made the greens stand out more, but everything was softer. I have no idea if any of that is valid, scientifically, but that’s the impression I was left with. I had to tone the greens down in almost every photo that had grass in it, and balance the blue if I had a sunny day to work with.
