29Jul-Photo Release – The girls love it here – long straight flat runs and they can be off-leash. Most of the Raptor images I’ve captured have come from this location. It’s chock full of ground squirrels, voles, chipmucks, snakes, lizards, and frogs.
I’ve captured the following species here:
- Red Tailed Hawks
- American Kestrels
- White-tailed Kites
- Peregrine Falcons
- Bald Eagles (occasionally)
- Vultures
- Crows
- Red-Winged Blackbirds
- Ducks & Geese (seasonally)
Only once have I been able to capture the park’s apex predator. The fox in this set was on the other side of the six-foot fence that separates the quarry from the park. It was returning to it’s den when it saw me and the dogs about one-hundred fifty yards away. I caught the movement in my peripheral and saw the critter go from a standing position to the other side of the fence without touching it, and then bolt for the den. The girls were in hot pursuit. I didn’t call them back. That sucker was way ahead of them and pulling away. It got into the drain pipe at the end of the trench before the girls cleared the brush below. They sniffed over to the entrance. I was ready to call them off when they decided to call it a game and came back on their own. I wonder if they saw some spooky golden eyes staring back at them from the dark. 😯
In case you’re wondering; the girls always come when I call, instantly. The Fox was in no danger and started running before my dogs even registered it was there.

Don’t be fooled by the Perspective compression (often called lens compression or telephoto compression) in the photo with both dogs and fox included.
It makes background elements look much larger and closer to foreground subjects than they actually are, creating a “flattened” or stacked appearance.
Technically, the optical compression isn’t caused directly by the glass inside the lens itself, but rather by distance. Because a telephoto lens has a narrow field of view, you have to stand much further away from your subject to get the same framing you would get with a wider lens. At that greater distance, the relative difference in distance between your subject and the background shrinks significantly, making them appear right on top of each other.
That’s the effect you see in some photos with the moon seeming large enough to touch and much larger than you expect it to be in comparison to the house in the foreground.
