A Few of My Favorite Things: A Walk at Tesla-Discovery
It all begins with a hike.
If you ask the dogs and me, there is no better way to spend a day than out on a trail together. I find myself wishing we could get out here even half as much as we used to, which makes every outing feel like a small gift. But when we do get out, some days just hit different, and believe it or not, an overcast day is my absolute favorite.

When the cloud cover rolls in, everything softens. It’s cooler on the paws, so the girls aren’t hopping anxiously from shade tree to shade tree trying to escape the heat. For a photographer, that flat, even light is pure magic – no harsh, blinding glare blowing out my highlights or scorching the sky.
The Song of the Trail – 19Aug-Photo Story

Out here at Tesla-Discovery, the air is almost always alive with feathers. On this morning, the local birdlife was out in full force. We listened to the chattering of songbirds, watched mockingbirds flit across the scrub, and caught the sharp calls of woodpeckers tapping away in the distance. Above us, jays flashed brilliant blue against the muted backdrop, while hawks glided effortlessly on the thermals, keeping watch over the hills.
Standing Guard: The Ancient Oak – 19Aug-Photo Story

As we rounded the bend, there it was: my very favorite tree in the whole world. That grand old oak stands like a quiet sentinel over the landscape. Its gnarled, moss-dusted branches reach out in every direction, carrying decades of local history in its deep bark. You can’t walk past it without stopping to admire its strength and character.
Wide Open Spaces – 19Aug-Photo Story

From beneath the oak’s canopy, all you have to do is look up and out in any direction. Spreading before you is the absolute best of Livermore, sweeping, unbroken vistas and wide-open spaces enough to ease any mind and please any eye. This day I had mother’s help framing Mount Diablo in layers of color and texture – PERFECT.
The seasons here bring their own dramatic rhythm. Spring in the East Bay can be notoriously fleeting, and this year proved to be a fast one. By late April, the lush green grasses were already beginning to turn into their golden summer hue.
Even with the landscape browning up quickly, this walk was a true reward. To have the cool cloud cover, the birds in the air, the dogs happily by my side, and that favorite old oak framing the view; well, it was a day where all my favorite things came together perfectly in one frame.
Standing beneath the broad, reaching canopy of that old oak and taking in the sweeping vistas of Livermore reminds me why these moments outdoors mean so much. Though spring’s green hills pass quickly into golden summer, days like this, where cool breezes, singing birds, wide-open spaces, and loyal companions all align, leave a lasting imprint. It’s a gentle reminder to slow down, appreciate the changing seasons, and cherish every opportunity to immerse ourselves in the natural world.
