The Heritage & Evolution of Livermore Valley Viticulture
Livermore’s viticultural story began in the 1840s when Robert Livermore planted the valley’s first commercial wine grapes. However, the region’s trajectory changed permanently in the 1880s when visionary winemakers recognized the unique east-west orientation of the valley, which draws cooling evening fog and breezes directly from the San Francisco Bay.

- The European Foundation: C. H. Wente and James Concannon established their namesake wineries in 1883. C. H. Wente imported Chardonnay cuttings from France’s Montpellier nursery, establishing the famed “Wente Clone” that now accounts for roughly 80 percent of all American Chardonnay vines. Simultaneously, Concannon introduced Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings directly from Château Margaux in Bordeaux.
- International Acclaim: In 1889, Charles Wetmore’s Cresta Blanca Winery won the Grand Prix at the Paris Exposition, stunning the wine world by proving that California could produce premier wines capable of rivaling top European estates.
- Modern Renaissance: Despite setbacks during Prohibition, Livermore’s foundational roots endured. Today, the Livermore Valley AVA boasts over 50 wineries and 5,000 acres of protected vineyards, blending historical giants with innovative boutique labels focused on Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and estate whites.
I’m not a drinker of any sort nowadays. I had one of those funny bugs that causes one to like something too much. To be honest, I was never a wine lover. Donna is and she was in heaven when we came here. That was perhaps the only attraction for her initially. BTW, she does not have that bug and never did. She doesn’t partake in the house now, in deference to me. She does have a taste for the finer things.
