02Sept-Photo Story: Before I made it to Half Moon Bay proper one day in May, I couldn’t help but stop first and try my hand at the Coastal Trail on the state beach there in Half Moon Bay. The visual draw of the open ocean and rugged cliffs was far too powerful to simply drive past, inviting an impromptu exploration of the coastal heights.

Hiking the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail
Stepping onto the bluff trail, the expansive reach of the California coast immediately opens up in every direction. The views are spectacular even if the hike to the top is just a bit vigorous. Following the worn dirt path as it snakes along steep, exposed inclines brings hikers up toward rewarding vistas high above the ocean. Looking across the landscape, dramatic headlands carve into the turquoise sea while white surf crashes continuously against dark rocky shores and hidden sandy coves below.
Wildflowers and Ocean Winds – 02Sept-Photo Story
Late spring along the San Mateo coast brings vibrant life to the bluff-top ecosystem. Nestled within the coastal scrub and tall grasses along the ridges, purple lupines and bright yellow wildflowers bloom beneath clear blue skies. Looking down from the higher cliffs reveals the winding trail carved into the green hillside, where fellow hikers and dogs appear as tiny distant figures traversing the rugged terrain.
Reaching the Bluff Top – 02Sept-Photo Story
As you approach the highest ridge points of the trail, the surrounding region comes into full focus. Cool ocean breezes sweep across the open slopes, carrying the fresh scent of salt spray up from the shoreline below. Looking far across the water, distant piers and coastal settlements stretch out along the coastline beneath a soft horizon line. The physical effort required to climb these steep paths is instantly matched by the quiet, sweeping beauty of the Pacific.

Taking the time to pull off Highway 1 and tackle the steep paths of the Coastal Trail proved to be an unforgettable start to visiting Half Moon Bay. Standing atop the windy bluffs while watching waves crash against the shore provides a grounding perspective on California’s wild edges.
