The Technical Evolution of a Shoot

Beyond the initial shutter click, this project serves as a personal laboratory for refining my post-processing techniques. When reviewing older files, I am not just looking for a strong composition; I am evaluating how my understanding of dynamic range, noise reduction, and color grading has evolved. Working with RAW files from my Nikon D850 allows me to revisit scenes with the benefit of modern software tools. Often, I find that a shot I dismissed years ago—perhaps due to a technical limitation of my equipment at the time or an oversight in my early editing workflow—can now be salvaged into something compelling. This section of the archive is, in many ways, a testament to the fact that a photographer’s vision is a living, breathing entity that matures alongside their technical proficiency.

Why “UnSpun”?

You may notice the branding here aligns with my broader initiative, Popi’s UnSpun News. Just as my reporting seeks to provide a wholesome, unvarnished look at positive happenings, these Photo Releases are designed to be an ‘unspun’ look at nature and life. There is no heavy-handed manipulation or commercial intent here. Instead, these images represent the raw, authentic moments I’ve been fortunate enough to witness, from the subtle flight of a Great White Egret in our local wetlands to the quiet, fleeting beauty of a sunrise in Livermore. By stripping away the filters and the ‘hype,’ I hope to share the genuine experience of being behind the camera in the quiet spaces of our world.

Why a new page?

Over time, my daily updates have grown into a massive, sprawling archive, blending stories, books, and images into a single, unwieldy footprint. To give each piece of content the breathing room it truly deserves, I am separating the threads. While my narrative writing and books will find a permanent home on the “Good Reads” page, this space is strictly reserved for the visual journeys, serving as a central hub for all my photo-centric posts.

Please note that this is distinct from the Gallery, which remains exclusively reserved for high-quality, print-ready feature pieces. Instead, think of this page as a dynamic, evolving journal of specific moments in time. I am currently sorting through years of extensive image collections, diving back into the archives to meticulously recurate my past work. My goal is to pull out a single shoot every day or two, separating the wheat from the chaff to ensure that only the most striking, meaningful captures make the final cut.

This process isn’t just about organizing old files to stay busy; it is an active, technical challenge. Re-examining these shoots allows me to rigorously test my evolving post-processing and editing skills against a massive variety of lighting conditions and subjects. Each collection will be published chronologically based on when the shutter actually clicked, formatted clearly by the shoot date, such as “23May-Photo Release”.

Ultimately, this project is a celebration of the creative process. Looking back at these frames with fresh eyes reminds me of the pure, unfiltered joy of creation, the quiet thrill of waiting for the perfect alignment of light, motion, and subject, and the timeless satisfaction of freezing that fleeting magic forever.

The Discipline of Curation

Curating this page is an exercise in restraint. In the digital age, it is all too easy to hoard thousands of images on a hard drive, hidden away and forgotten. By committing to this, I am imposing a discipline of selection. I force myself to act as the primary editor of my own history. When I dive back into the archives, I am constantly asking: ‘Does this image still resonate? Does it tell a story?’ If the answer is no, I move on. This process ensures that what you see here is a collection of my best, most meaningful work, a curated retrospective that I am proud to share. It is a slow, methodical journey through time, and I invite you to join me as I continue to curate and release these moments, one shoot at a time.

I’ll never be done with photography and imaging, even if I never get out of the house again, I’ll find different ways to showcase the same shoots. I don’t just use the same photos I’ve processed before. I process the extras I made of the same scene. Even a slight difference in perspective can open all news avenues of creativity. This journey isn’t over, not by a long shot.
